A new study conducted within the IMAGIO project has provided important insights into how artificial intelligence (AI) could strengthen and improve the clinical management of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) refers to a situation where colorectal cancer spreads to the liver. The research from Maastricht University Medical Centre under Work Package 3, which focuses on liver cancer treatment clinical pathway, examines the growing potential of AI-driven tools to support decision-making and improve outcomes for patients with CRLM. CRLM often requires complex decisions about surgery or minimally invasive procedures like thermal ablation. These treatments aim to remove or destroy cancerous liver tumours, but predicting outcomes and choosing the best treatment can be challenging.
The IMAGIO study highlights that AI can help with these assessments by analysing medical images more precisely. AI can automate tumour segmentation, which means outlining the tumour on a scan, saving significant time and reducing the chance of human error. It can also identify the ablation zone and calculate how much surrounding tissue has been successfully treated. These calculations can be difficult for clinicians to make consistently using conventional methods.
Another promising area identified in the study is the use of prediction models, which are AI tools that estimate a patient’s likely outcome by analysing patterns found in imaging data and medical records. This can lead to more personalised and effective treatment plans, improving patients’ chances of recovery and quality of life.
However, the study highlights that current AI tools for CRLM treatment are still in early stages. Many studies have small sample sizes, lack validation, and use different methods, which limits their reliability and application in real-world clinical settings. The study emphasises the need for larger, international research efforts to develop and validate AI tools that can be widely used to support doctors in providing the best care for CRLM patients.
For IMAGIO, this study reinforces the value of ongoing efforts to improve cancer survival outcomes through minimally invasive, efficient and affordable care pathways. Work Package 3 is progressing in harmonising imaging procedures and supporting the development of advanced tools that help clinicians make better-informed decisions during liver cancer treatment. These efforts aim to enhance accuracy and enable more personalised care for patients.
