IMAGIO-Liver Cancer Awareness Month Campaign: Empowering Individuals and Creating Impact

As Liver Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, we reflect on the strides made throughout this month to raise awareness of liver cancer, a disease that affects tens of thousands in Europe alone. Over the past month, our campaign has reached countless individuals, spreading vital information that could save lives. At IMAGIO, we aim to educate our community on facts and early symptoms to raise awareness, as well as continue the research on innovative treatments that benefit patients.

In our campaign, we have shed light on the alarming statistics that liver cancer presents. Liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer in Europe, with 87,000 new cases each year (Source: European Cancer Information System, 2020). However, its high mortality rate is a result of late detection, underscoring the urgent need for early diagnosis. Our campaign reinforced the importance of early screening, noting that patients diagnosed at an early stage have a five-year survival rate of over 70%. Unfortunately, advanced-stage diagnosis significantly reduces survival chances (Source: European Liver Patients’ Association, 2021.)

As we highlighted in our campaign, early-stage detection is a crucial factor in improving the outcomes for liver cancer patients. Patients can have a better chance of recovery when cancer is diagnosed at an early stage and treated. However, many cases are detected too late, largely due to a lack of awareness. This highlights the need for ongoing education and awareness campaigns that encourage people to recognise early symptoms and seek diagnosis sooner. By spreading knowledge about liver cancer and its warning signs, we can empower individuals to take proactive steps toward early detection, ultimately saving lives.

A major focus of our campaign was helping people recognise the early signs of liver cancer such as unexplained weight loss, loss of appetite, persistent fatigue and weakness, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), and upper abdominal pain or swelling. Each of these symptoms could indicate an underlying liver issue, and early intervention can lead to better outcomes.

While Liver Cancer Awareness Month is ending, our effort to deal with liver cancer continues. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant, see your general practitioner as soon as possible if you see any early signs and share what you’ve learned with others. As we look ahead, IMAGIO will continue its work in developing innovative imaging and treatment solutions that simplify treatment processes and improve care for liver cancer patients. Together, we can create a future where liver cancer is diagnosed sooner and treated more effectively.
